I have almost been the president of your local chapter for one year and have gained much insight into how things work thanks to the great leadership of our past president Tamra Kehoe and the support of a wonderful board and membership.  I still have much to learn!  I am excited to inform you of some great past and future chapter events, so keep reading for the updates:

1. Thank you to those who attended our half-day NAPNAP Oregon Chapter Annual Spring Conference and Annual Business Meeting at Legacy Emmanuel Hospital on April 1st

This year we had an attendance of two student members, 22 members, and 3 non-members!

We had 3 great speakers for a total of 3.75 CMEs, including 1.5 pharmacology hours.

Teri Woo PhD, CNL, CPNP, FAANP

 discussed Updates in Pediatric Pharmacology

Michael Gilbert MD MS presented on Infectious Disease in the Infant

Dr. Teri Petterson discussed Trauma Informed Care and how we can utilize this approach in our different areas of pediatric health-care.

2. We are very excited to be the host-chapter for NAPNAPs Pediatric Pharmacology Symposium in Portland on October 1st 2017!  This year Teri Woo PhD, CNL, CPNP, FAANP will be providing an all-day session on topics including respiratory, GI, immunizations, antibiotics, psychotropics and nutraceuticals.

CEs include 7 contact hours, 7 pharmacology, 1 psychopharmacology.

The symposium is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with breakfast and lunch provided.

Registration is only $175 for NAPNAP members and student members.  Non-members can register for $225.

Your board is looking into organizing an informal after-conference get-together for members to socialize, network, and relax after this long day of learning!  Be on the lookout for announcements regarding this event.  It will most likely be dinner and/or “happy hour” refreshments at a local restaurant.  If needed the local chapter will pay to rent a room, but we will ask those who come to pay for her/his own food and drink!

3. “Discussions With…”: Pediatric Nutrition in Primary Care.

Two of your chapter members have volunteered to help lead the first of these programs meant to bring PNPs together to learn from experts, share ideas and socialize!

Please be on the lookout for more information regarding the upcoming program on Pediatric Nutrition in Primary Care.

If you are interested in hosting your own “Discussions With….” program in your area the board will help pay for some of the expenses (food, renting a space, etc).  Just contact us atoregonnapnap@gmail.com to learn more! So far we do not have a way to provide CMEs for these smaller-events but that may be possible down the road….

4. Legislative Update!

Medicaid just published new legislation regarding the VA Nurse Practitioners role.  Medicare is 50 years old and its language is very physician centric.  We are encourage you to contact state and federal government about VA Nurse Practitioners being able to function in full.

The easiest, most straightforward way to contact your local government in support of legislation that affects our profession and our practice is to open the Action Alert’s that National sends us (In the News Flashes, they will say URGENT in the subject line).  Follow the instructions to click on links that will direct you to pre-written letters to sign and send to local and federal law-makers.

As a member you are invited to join in on the monthly child health advocacy policy meetings that are held on the first Wednesday of every month.  Just email healthpolicy@napnap.org

Nancy’s full update will be posted on our website and I will put it on our Facebook page.

As a PNP, all of these issues affect your practice

5. Open Board Positions

Nominations are still being taken for the positions of secretary, treasurer, president elect, Outreach Chair, and student board member.  If you are interested in nominating yourself or a fellow member, or if you have any questions, please contact me before June 1st atnapnaporegon@gmail.com or (703) 732-3419. We are fortunate to have some members already step up to the plate!  The candidates’ names and a short bio on each will be sent out via email to our membership on June 1st!  Voting will take place by email.  Please keep an EYE OUT on June 1st for this important email regarding the future leadership of our organization.

6. Scholarship Available for Oregon Chapter Member to Cover Registration for the National Conference.

Even though next year’s National Conference in Denver seems far away, its not too early to start thinking about applying for a scholarship to cover the cost of the 2017 conference registration fee.

We are inviting Oregon members who are members in both the national, as well as the Oregon chapter of NAPNAP, to write a one page essay explaining how attending the national conference would benefit the Oregon chapter of NAPNAP or how attending the national conference will influence the health of children in the state of Oregon.

Please email essays to: Oregon Chapter President, Heather Stadnisky at
heatherstad@gmail.comEssays are due by February 1st 2017, and the winning candidate will be notified by February 20th 2017.

7. Connect with Oregon and National Chapter members and learn about job postings, CMEs, professional development, and practice pearls
