Mission and Vision Statement

Mission Statement

The mission of the Asthma and Allergy Special Interest Group (SIG) is to become the pre-eminent resource for nurse practitioners seeking to increase their knowledge of evidence-based management of asthma and allergic diseases. We are dedicated to improving the quality of health care for children and adolescents with asthma and allergies and to advancing the role of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs) and Advance Practice Nurses (APNs) in providing that care.

Vision Statement

The NAPNAP Asthma and Allergy SIG, in collaboration with the National Respiratory Training Center, will work to promote optimal health for children with asthma and allergies regardless of race or socioeconomic status.  Through leadership, practice, advocacy, education, and research, our goals are:

  • To improve asthma outcomes and decrease related health care disparities among children and adolescents with asthma
  • To promote the role of PNPs and APNs as leaders of the asthma health care team
  • To provide evidence-based asthma education and resources for practice
  • To provide a forum for evidence based asthma research
  • To advocate for children and adolescents with asthma and their families, especially those most burdened by asthma related health care disparities
Goals for 2011-2012

  1. Continue development of Asthma and Allergy Toolkit.
  2. Continue work on developing NAPNAP position statement on the inclusion of asthma and allergy curriculum in all APN programs.
  3. Create awareness of AE-C and increase number of NAPNAP members sitting for certification.  Establish collaborative relationship with NAECB.
  4. Develop communication channels with SIG members which include Facebook.
  5. Create strategies for transitioning adolescents with asthma to adult health care providers via Medical Home Model.
  6. Develop 2012 NAPNAP pre-conference intensive workshop on spirometry.
