EMPLOYER:  Children’s Specialty Group (CSG) is a physician-owned multispecialty medical group practice comprised of over 130 pediatric specialists and subspecialists whose mission is to provide high quality healthcare to children and adolescents, train future physicians, and conduct research to improve children’s health.  The physicians of CSG base their practices at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia, the state’s only free-standing children’s hospital.  This position is within the CSG Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.


POSITION DESCRIPTION:  In collaboration with the Emergency Room Nursing Director and Attending Physicians, the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for delivery of quality, cost effective and evidence based patient care.  Work involves the coordination and directing of workflow and functions in the triage arena to facilitate a safe and efficient workflow and clinical practices.  Serves as liaison between nursing and physician staff to initiate appropriate pathway and protocol orders, patient evaluation in collaboration with the Triage RN to facilitate appropriate and timely access to clinical services, initiation of treatment options for patients with emergent needs and facilitates discharge for patients requiring minimal treatment options beyond MSE.  Serves as a clinical team member delivering medical services required for ESI level 4 and 5 patients in the Emergency Department.  Reports to the physician and nursing department leadership.  Performs other duties as assigned.


This is a full-time position and is scheduled as follows:


  • Twelve 12-hour shifts per month for six months of the calendar year

  • Thirteen 12-hour shifts per month for six months of the calendar year

  • November through April shifts will be scheduled from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm

  • May through October shifts  will be scheduled from 12:00 am to 12:00 pm

  • Three weekend shifts per month (Saturday or Sunday)

  • Holidays are scheduled as follows:

    • One summer holiday per year (Memorial Day, Independence Day, or Labor Day)

    • One major holiday per year (Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day)

    • Easter is rotated annually.  Current expectation is Easter Sunday every third year.


      EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING MINIMUM:  Current Virginia state license as a Registered Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Registered Family Nurse Practitioner holding a valid Compact State license.  Minimum of 3 years clinical nursing experience in a critical care or emergency department preferred.  Pediatric experience preferred.  Current clinical competence required.  Possesses excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills with the ability to plan, establish and maintain a professional work environment.  Ability to identify problems and implement solutions for operational and organizational functions.  Interpersonal skills necessary to work with multidisciplinary team to maintain excellence in the delivery of care.  Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice.  CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.  Demonstrated knowledge of CMS regulations required.  ATLS preferred or successful completion within 90 days of hire.  PALS, ACLS, TNCC required.  30 CEU’s/contact hours required per three year verification cycle, of which 50% must be via an extramural sources or as stipulated by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services, Trauma Center Designation Program.
