Hi everyone,
I am writing this last newsletter of my Presidency for the year end 2014 for our CT chapter of over 130 members. It has been a productive year and it was great to meet so many members who have not attended dinners before and new students I hope to continue to see in the future.
Our incoming Board:
President: Judy Blackman-Cochran
President Elect:__________
Treasurer: Ginny Tierney
CEU and Membership: Angela Orsini-Gary
Secretary: Darlene Abbate
Dinner/event coordinator: Rosi Bravo-Cavalho
Legislative Chair: Kate Steven
We are hoping someone will volunteer to be a website coordinator/developer___________
Being part of the Board is very rewarding. I think we can all say we have new friends beside being colleagues. Being able to help develop our chapter takes little time and the return is plentiful.
At the National meeting in Boston we were given a turn key guide that describes the roles and responsibilities of each position very clearly. We are all willing to have someone shadow a position so that we can continue to have a "fresh" Board full of new ideas.
This past years CEU dinners were:
9/24/13 Food Allergies-Hillary Trujillo-Hernandez
10/25/13 Yale All Day Conference- Neuro session (Brenda Cowan-Frautschy APRN), Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Irsal Cabahug APRN), Affordable Care Act (Dawn Johnson RN Consultant) and a Psych panel answering ques on death and tragedies; Resume writing with Jill Melnic
4/1/14 Anxiety Disorders Jill Herring
5/1/14 Choleostoma Dr Eric Baum
Survey Monkey results;
55 Responses which is only 1/3 of our members so they results may be skewed-24% of respondents live in Hartford county then the next largest group is 13% Fairfield county- when we look at the data from National most members live in Fairfield county
87% of respondents work in Pediatrics, 55% full time, 36% part time and 9% are inactive
43% of respondents make between $81,000-$100,000 and 30% $61-80,000
90% respondents receive the benefit of health care, 65% license payment, 50% CEU opportunities, 78% CEU reimbursement
Pension 20%
64% of respondents did not attend at least 2 CT meetings due to work conflict, child care and/or location. I can see individual responses and can tell you most of those who wrote location didn't attend when the location was changed!
85% of respondents didn't attend the all day conference at Yale b/c of timing, couldn't get day off, conflicts, didn't know about it... the last comment perplexes me when the notice goes out the same way alll of our emails go out for CEU dinners/opportunities
When I sent out an individual email asking what day of the week people preferred only 42 people responded out of 130+ members with Fri winning the all day conference with 20 votes and Sat 15 votes, 2 votes for Tuesday at 4 wed.
56% did not attend National conference due to mostly distance and cost, also work commitments
49% said they would attend meetings if they were closer, and 41% said they would like 3-4 meetings a yr and an all day conference
Meeting dates for next year:
As you can see we alternated locations within the state to help accommodate travel for everyone. We will not use the site we did in Milford due to lack of noise control. Other sites are being considered. We will saty at First and Last Tavern in Middleton due to them having a great separate space, they house our screen which is a 1000 lbs and they have been very reliable.
9/24/14, Wed,
Middle town
10/24/14, Fri All day conference at Yale, extended hours (9am-6pm) and more CEU's to be offered so request your day off now!
3/24/14, Tues, Southern CT
4/23/14, Thurs, Middleton
Please remember there are now laws that prohibit pharmaceutical places paying for dinner and being able to offer CEU's. This is why we don't have free dinners.
Additional Board only meeting: 11/18 6-9pm at Ginny's
Topics and presenters being considered for the all day conference include:
Derm
Legal Defense
Scoliosis, gait analysis and injury prevention
PT muscular eval
Ortho
Mental Health
Disaster
preparedness
Vaccines
Formula and nutrional update
CBC analysis heme/onc update
Resume writing
psychopharm update
*****We are hoping to have someone who works at Yale will volunteer to develop a committee to run the Fall all day conference. It can be a couple of members that divide the roles or create mini committees that can include students. It is too much work for the ceu/dinner coordinator to do alone. The site is already reserved. Please contact me if you are interested in helping ot at dabbate05@gmail.com.
National Conference is 3/11-14/15 in Las Vegas; 3/15-18/16 in Atlanta; then Colorado the following year.
The Board looked at the past Bylaws:
A goal next year is to revise the by laws. We will get the National template and consider each Board position and its commitment
Donation:
A $100 stipend is being offered to 2 students who attended at least 2 meetings this past year that will be rewarded if they attend the National meeting
Goals for next year:
To write goals that are in SMART format, identifying who is responsible for specific parts of the written goal that also include outcome objectives.
Increase our membership
Increase the length of the all day conference and offer more CEU's
Conduct another Survey Monkey
Community outreach
Peer to peer recruitment
Discuss ways to recruit and retain Board members
Develop a website
Review and update the bylaws
PNP of the Year: Tina Rickenback who has given so much to the profession and to the CT Chapter
I want to thank all of the Board members of this term for their hard work and enthusiasm for our CT Chapter. It was a pleasure working together and I look forward to continuing to be an active member in the secretarial role. It was always great to see our regular attendees at dinner meetings and all of the new faces I hope to see in the Fall. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
