JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Connecticut Association of School Based Health Centers, Inc. (CASBHC) seeks a dynamic full-time Executive Director to lead Connecticut’s network of over 100 school based health centers. The Executive Director will lead CASBHC’s advocacy on behalf of the entire network, as well as leading CASBHC’s own fund development and overall management. The Executive Director must have excellent networking, communication and project implementation skills.

About the Connecticut Association of School Based Health Centers
CASBHC’s vision is that all children and adolescents in Connecticut are healthy and achieving at their fullest potential. CASBHC works towards this vision by supporting a large and growing network of school based health centers.
Connecticut's School Based Health Centers (SBHCs) are comprehensive primary health care facilities licensed as outpatient clinics or as hospital satellites. The SBHCs are located within or on school grounds and serve students in grades pre-K-12. The health centers are staffed by multi-disciplinary teams of pediatric and adolescent health specialists, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, physicians and in some cases, dentists and dental hygienists. A school based health center is not the same as the school nurse's office. School nurses and SBHCs work together, and school nurses often refer students to SBHCs because they are able to treat and resolve student health problems.
CASBHC is a membership organization formed in 1994 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency to support the establishment, funding, and professional skills of the school based health centers.

CASBHC has successfully built strong support for the school based health centers from Connecticut’s legislature, Commissioners of state departments, and other policy makers. CASBHC is a state affiliate of the national school based health center organization (the School-Based Health Alliance). Through CASBHC’s work, Connecticut is recognized as a national leader in the development and quality of its school based health centers.
CASBHC convenes training events for school based health center staff, as well as convening a well-attended annual conference. These events help keep Connecticut’s centers at the forefront of best practices for health care for children and adolescents.
CASBHC initiatives in the past two years have included:
Person-Centered Medical Homes: CASBHC was a pilot state for the development of NCQA recognized School Based Medical Home designation.
Connecticut School Based Health Center Advisory Committee: CASBHC is an appointed member of this legislatively-mandated committee to advise the Commissioner of Public Health on statutory and regulatory matters pertaining to school based health.
National Policy Collaborative: one of four states to participate in a national collaborative addressing policy changes to benefit and sustain SBHCs, resulting in passage of an SBHC definition in state statute.
Oral Health Advocacy: collaborated with multiple partners to impact oral health in Medicaid and commercial insurance; developed a first-ever guide to school based dental services in Connecticut.
National and State-Based Quality Initiatives: one of four states to test national performance standards for SBHCs; continued a state-specific quality improvement initiative with 20 SBHC sites in Connecticut
New Executive Director’s challenges and opportunities
The new Executive Director will lead and be the face of CASBHC’s successful work to maintain and expand support for the excellent health services that school based health centers are delivering across the state.
The new Executive Director will:
Speak effectively in halls of government for continued and expanded support for the network of school based health centers, and monitor government developments that could impact the centers;
Collaborate and build common purpose with a broad range of stakeholders involved in health care for children and adolescents;

Sustain and diversify CASBHC’s funding base through grant-writing and donor acquisition, building the membership, delivery/oversight of training events and the annual conference, and development of government and other contracts;
Support the work of CASBHC’s Board of Directors.
CASBHC is a small organization with the opportunity to grow in size and influence. The outgoing CASBHC Executive Director has been a highly visible and respected leader over the past 11 years. The new Executive Director will build upon a strong foundation, while exploring new approaches, directions, and collaborations to further enhance and sustain Connecticut’s network of school based health centers.
Key Responsibilities of the CASBHC Executive Director
The new Executive Director will:
Provide strategic leadership to drive organizational success and impact in an ever-changing environment.
Support and build the CASBHC Board in its work to advance the organization’s mission, assist with fundraising, and carry out its responsibilities for organizational oversight.
Represent CASBHC in coalitions and on committees that impact child and adolescent health; use advocacy, collaboration and communication to expand support for the work and funding of school based health centers.
Initiate, organize and deliver CASBHC strategic initiatives, consistent with CASBHC’s strategic plan.
Oversee the conference and training functions delivered by CASBHC.
Develop and deliver on CASBHC’s communications plan.
Manage a $240,000 budget, working closely with CASBHC’s accountant, and, through grant-writing and other activities, generate new and diversified fund sources.
Manage a small group of staff, consultants, interns and volunteers, expanding operations as funds become available.
Sustain CASBHC’s non-profit fiscal, insurance, and compliance structures.
Desired Skills, Characteristics, and Competencies
The new Executive Director must:
Demonstrate strategic thinking and vision;
Stand up for core principles, while effectively working in coalition and collaboration with other organizations and individuals;
Demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills;
Manage, prioritize and implement a complex list of projects;
Become expert and maintain awareness of changes in government policy impacting school based health centers.
The new Executive Director must have a health-related background, degree or experience.
The new Executive Director must have either experience or the ability to quickly learn:

How to navigate and impact governmental decision processes;
How to apply for grants and build a donor-base; and
How to run non-profit business structures, manage a budget and ensure compliance with government and funder requirements.
A Bachelor’s degree is required. (Relevant post-graduate degree is preferred.)
Location, schedule and travel requirements
CASBHC’s office is in North Haven, Connecticut. The Executive Director must be able to drive/travel to meetings and events throughout Connecticut as needed. The Executive Director must work regular office hours, plus evening or weekend meetings or activities as may be necessary.
Compensation package
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
