Missouri Primary Election Results Summary

Good Afternoon! I’m sure everyone is happy that primary election day is over. Below is a summary of Missouri primary election results. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Missouri Senate

Perhaps the most surprising upset of the night, Sen. Bill White (R-Newton Co), was defeated for re-election by political newcomer Jill Carter by a margin of 52-47%. White, who served as Chairman of the Senate Seniors, Families, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee, was considered a potential candidate for floor leader (in addition to Sens O'Laughlin and Bernskoetter). Carter describes herself as an advocate for healthcare choice and citizen's rights and was heavily supported by Missouri Right to Life and the Concerned Women.

  • In a race way too close for comfort, Sen. Justin Brown (R-Phelps Co.), narrowly defeated Rep. Suzie Pollock (R-Camden Co) by 384 votes.

  • In Jefferson County, Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman defeated Reps. Shane Roden and Dan Shaul, as well as former Rep. Jeff Roorda, with just over 34% of the vote to replace term-limited Sen. Paul Wieland.

  • Rep. Curtis Trent (R-Greene Co.), defeated businessman Brian Gelner to replace Sen. Eric Burlison in the Missouri Senate, capturing 58% of the vote.

  • Rep. Rusty Black (R-Livingston Co.) defeated Rep. J Eggleston and former Rep. Delus Johnson to replace term-limited Sen. Dan Hegeman.

  • Rep. Travis Fitzwater (R-Callaway Co.) defeated Reps Jeff Porter, former Rep. Bryan Spencer, and attorney Mike Carter to replace term-limited Sen. Jeanie Riddle.

  • Rep. Nick Schroer defeated fellow Rep. John Wiemann for the St. Charles Co.-based seat currently held by term-limited Sen. Bob Onder.

  • Rep. Tracy McCreery ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination and will face dermatologist Republican George Hruza for the senate seat currently held by term-limited Sen. Jill Schupp in St. Louis County.

  • St. Louis business owner Ben Brown defeated Rep. Nate Tate and Franklin Co businessman Bob Jones to replace term-limited Sen. Dave Schatz.

  • Incumbents Cindy O'Laughlin, Mike Bernskoetter, Lincoln Hough, Tony Luetkemeyer, Karla May, Mike Cierpiot, Brian Williams, and Sandy Crawford won their respective primaries and will likely return to the senate in January.

Missouri House

  • Incumbents Wiley Price (D-St. Louis City), Annette Turnbaugh (D-Kansas City), Neil Smith (D-St. Louis Co.), Randy Railsback (R-Caldwell Co), Mike Person (D-St. Louis Co), and John Simmons (R-Franklin Co.) were defeated in their primary elections.

Federal Notes

  • State Sen. Eric Burlison (R-Greene Co.), who chose not to run for re-election in order to seek the CD-7 seat vacated by Congressman Billy Long, defeated former State Sen. Jay Wasson and current State Senator Mike Moon.  Sen. Moon is not up for re-election to the Missouri Senate until 2024, and will return to the Missouri Senate in January.

  • State Sen. Rick Brattin (R-Cass Co.), elected to the Missouri Senate in 2020, was defeated in his attempt to elevate to the US House to take Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler’s seate.  He will return to the Missouri Senate in January.

  • State Sen. Stephen Roberts (D-St. Louis), elected to the Missouri Senate in 2020, was defeated in his attempt to defeat US Congresswoman Cori Bush.  He will return to the Missouri Senate in January.

  • Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt won the Republican nomination and Trudy Busch Valentine won the Democrat nomination to replace retiring US Senator Roy Blunt.  These two will face off in the November general election along with Independent Candidate John Wood, who recently secured enough signatures to get on the November ballot.

Supporters of Missouri's nurse practitioners had BIG wins at the polls yesterday evening following a contentious primary election that saw a few surprises.

Most notable for NPs was the significant victories of long time APRN supporters Eric Burlison and Nick Schroer.

Following the general election in November, Sen. Eric Burlison will almost certainly cruise to an easy victory to become Missouri's next Congressman from the 7th District, replacing current Congressman Billy Long, who ran unsuccessfully to replace Sen. Roy Blunt. Burlison has been a staunch supporter of NPs, filing multiple bills to lift restrictions on APRNs in Missouri.

A second HUGE win for Missouri NPs was the primary election victory of Rep. Nick Schroer in the 2nd Senate District. Like Burlison, Schroer has been a long time champion for our causes. Schroer's wife is a nurse practitioner, so he is acutely aware of the challenges facing Missouri NPs. In addition to filing multiple bills benefitting APRNs in the House, Schroer will now take his uncanny ability to pass bills to the upper chamber (assuming he wins the general election as he should), where he will no doubt continue advocating for NPs.

An unexpected but significant note was the loss of incumbent Sen. Bill White of Joplin. Although Sen. White had softened his hard-nose stance on NPs over the past couple of years, he still remained as a formidable obstacle to pass APRN legislation. White was upset in his Senate primary by conservative grassroots advocate Jill Carter, who will be new to elected office. While we do not yet know where Mrs. Carter stands on APRN issues, her defeat of Sen. White clears the way for progress on APRN issues.

CONGRATULATIONS to Sen. Burlison and Rep. Nick Schroer on their victories. If you feel so inclined, we encourage you to send them an email congratulating them on their wins. You can email Eric at info@ericburlisonforcongress.com and Nick at nick@nickschroer.com
