Our Chapter History

The Michigan Chapter, one of NAPNAP's oldest NAPNAP, was established in April 1979. The chapter, the eighth in the nation, grew from 40 PNPs to more than 300 members.

The Michigan NAPNAP Chapter aims to provide leadership and resources for Michigan nurse practitioners, advocating for improved practice through education and legislative action. Their goals include continuing education, promoting legislation for pediatric care quality and the NP role, liaising with similar organizations, and expanding public educational programs.

The chapter's collaboration with other organizations led to the passage of HB5400, signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder on Jan. 5, 2017. This law, Public Act 499, granted APRNs in Michigan improved practice terms, including the independent authority to prescribe non-controlled substances, prescribe physical therapy and speech therapy and prescribe Schedule II-V controlled substances through a delegated agreement with a physician. The passage of HB5400 aligned with the 2016 revisions to the Board of Medicine and Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery rules and aligned with the National Academy of Medicine's Future of Nursing Report's vision for NP practice.
