Meeting Minutes

DBMH SIG Collaborative Partnership Update

1.     NAPNAP / SDBP 2nd Annual Symposium

Kim Erlich and Anne DeBattista already planning this along with Jennie Olson and Tressa Dykstra, SDBP APN section leaders. This event will again take place at the SDBP Annual Meeting 9/13-9/16 at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC.

2.     Milestones Autism Resources

Makenzie Wesner working on this collaboration along with Milestones Conference Director, Leslie Rotsky. This organization holds their annual conference each year in June in Cleveland, OH. We aim to build familiarity and rapport over the next several months and then collaborate by sponsoring an educational session at their June 2020 conference. The educational session could be targeted toward either health professionals (they train residents) or parents/lay public. We would likely solicit abstracts from SIG members and these would be reviewed by our SIG board in conjunction with Milestones staff.

NAPNAP Position Statements - Brief Updates

1.     Integration of Mental Health in Primary Care

Working group in place for some time now, but group will be starting their work over again to accommodate new data/recommendations re: alcohol and other drugs (AOD) and ACEs. New timeline will be to submit statement draft to NAPNAP by summer 2019. Contact: Susan Van Cleve.

2.     PNP Role in Supporting Infant & Family Well-Being During First Year of Life

Working group worked on this during the last year but then received a request from NAPNAP board to change the focus a bit to support a statement title change to: the APRN Role in Supporting Children and Families in Early Care and Education. New timeline will be to submit statement draft to NAPNAP by June 30, 2019. Contact: Beth Heuer.

PMHS Task Force Analysis Report & Discussion

Susan Van Cleve and Elizabeth Hawkins-Walsh presented a brief PPT of summary results from their recently-published paper outlining the results of the PNCB PMHS Task Force Analysis. The group discussed the issue of the requirement of 2000 hours of relevant clinical practice over a 3-year period prior to applying for the certification exam. The query is whether it is felt that this clinical practice requirement is onerous or appropriate. SIG member Angie Nash questioned whether an educational requirement could be added, rather than considering reduction of clinical practice hours. SIG member Nan Gaylord raised issue that clinical practice requirement for PNP certification is only 600 hours, so why does PMHS require so many more. Kim Erlich answered that PMHS is a specialty certification above and beyond general certification. SIG member Dianna Inman felt strongly about PNCB adding an educational requirement for PMHS certification, as she felt this could be a means to alleviating the confusion that currently exists around billing for DBMH services as a PMHS vs. a PMHNP.  Lots of general discussion about whether PMHS should be a different type of certification more similar to existing PMHNP; however, this negates the history of the PMHS certification as it was designed. Several SIG members responded that they felt the clinical practice requirement was difficult to track and meet, especially for those working in primary care and seeking to obtain PMHS certification and/or more into more DBMH specialty-focused practice following PMHS certification. Many echoed difficulty in tracking practice hours if not working exclusively in DBMH setting.

SIG Awards

1.     DBMH Advocacy Award (Awarded to Angie Nash)

2.     DBMH Outstanding Contribution to SIG (Not Awarded, as there were no nominations for this)

Volunteer Opportunities (Ongoing)

1.     Collaborative Partnerships (e.g., Milestones) - described above.

2.     Parent resource development - it was previously recommended by several SIG members that our collective expertise could be used to develop a resource for parents, either a standalone resource or one that could be housed within the existing DBMHResource.com website. SIG board has attempted to solicit interested members to facilitate development/shepherd the process/work on it, but no one has stepped forward.

3.     Position Statements (discussed above)

4.     DBMHresource.org website maintenance

Proposed Goals for 2019-2020: (listed above)
